Unsupported handsets won't get Windows 10 Mobile anymore

If your handset was excluded from the official upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile from Windows Phone 8.1, and you were still running Windows 10 Mobile through Windows Insider program, you can't do it anymore. Microsoft has ended the Insider program to unsupported devices and if you are running an Insider preview, the only option left to you is to rollback to Windows 8.1 (or buy a new handset running Windows 10 Mobile).

Windows 10 Mobile

This news comes just before the Anniversary update and many of the Windows users are frustrated seeing the Insider builds running fine on there unsupported device.

Earlier, when Microsoft decided to exclude a number of Lumia from the official Windows 10 upgrade (Lumia 1020, say), the users were frustrated. But the Windows Insider still gave them a way to run the latest build on their phone. Though it came on the cost of some bugs, it was still okay to those who were willing to run the Windows 10 Mobile.

But the new update about the discontinuous of Insider program for unsupported devices lands those users in a position whether they can either switch back to Windows Phone 8.1 or buy a new handset al together (though I don't see much of options in the handset segment).

Yes, you can still continue to be on the build you are on, for Windows 10 but that comes on the cost of not receiving any more builds and unavailability of updates of apps and services to these devices.

You can always rollback to Windows Phone 8.1 from Windows 10 Mobile insider preview.
