How to update your Windows Phone to Windows Phone 10 Preview

Windows Phone 10Microsoft is releasing Windows 10 on July 29 in 190 countries and is free for the customers who are already running a genuine copy of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 However, if you have a Windows Phone and you are expecting Windows Phone 10 in your hand, you may have to wait till the end of the year. Microsoft is yet to announce a release date for Windows Phone 10 and the releases date is speculated somewhat near the end of this year.

The good news is if you are eager to try Windows Phone 10, you still can. The technical preview for WP 10 is now available and you can upgrade your phone to the latest build and try it out before an official release. This technical preview might not get you all the features that will be included in the final release, but most of them will be covered and you can avail them.

Some of the features Windows Phone 10 includes a compact Settings, added options in the action center, more ways to customize tiles, a nice app list with an option of setting a background image, Microsoft Edge browser, Store (beta) etc. We will leave this for future articles, for now lets see how you can update your Windows Phone to Windows Phone 10 Technical Preview.

Install Windows 10 Technical Preview on your Windows Phone

Note: Before you try to install Windows 10 Technical preview, consider backing up your Windows Phone since these builds have bugs and may lead to a complete non-functioning of your Windows Phone. I'm sure you don't want to lose your data/images/settings.

Download Windows Insider App from the Windows Store, and Install it.

Once you are done with it, launch the app and login with your Microsoft Account. You will have to register yourself to Insider program if you do not already have.

Once you have registered, you will be presented two options - Insider Slow and Insider Fast. If you want a comparatively stable build, go for the slow update option. And if you feel you don't wanna miss a update for even a day or two, try Insider Fast. Though, you may have greater chances of bricking your phone in the fast option.

I tried Insider Fast, my phone stopped worked. I had to return to Windows 8.1 from Windows Phone 10 Technical Preview. So, the next time I chose Insider Slow and things are pretty much fine till now. Choose wisely.

Now you are done with the settings. Navigate to App List > Settings > Phone Updates and tap on "Check for updates

Download the latest preview available and install it. It will take around 20-60 min and a reboot for the Windows 10 Technical preview installation on your device.
